With the cold weather outside, now is the perfect time to stay indoors and let your kids have fun learning about science. Here's some experiments you can do with kids of all ages.

Toilet Paper Test:

You see the commercials about the strength of each toilet paper brand, so why not put them to the test. Using two different brands, use some toilet paper to tape between two tables. Before taping down the second side, hang an ice cream bucket by the handle from the toilet paper.

Use cups of water, pennies or weights to see which brand lasts the longest. Then test each one multiple times to see if you get the same results.

Extracting Natural Pigments:

This is something simple everyone can do at home. All you need is water and oil to start experimenting. As people know, oil and water don't mix, so when you add other things like shreds of carrot to the mixture you can see if the natural color is water loving or water fearing.

Take food coloring for example. Start with the food coloring in water, then pour oil in the cup and shake it. You will notice the coloring will stay in the water leaving nothing but the oil on top.

Another example is carrots. By using small pieces in with water and after adding oil and shaking you will start to see a change. The oil starts to take on a yellow color from the carrots while the substance will stay at the bottom of the water.

This can be also done with markers, sharpies, cabbage and other items from around your home.

Salt Test:

With plenty of snow outside, give kids a fun way to see how by using salt it is melted.

Start with two cups of snow, and in the separate glasses with one pour in ice-melt, and the other use table salt. Kids will get to see the snow melt in front of their eyes. This is because the ice-melt is creating a lower freezing point.
