ISLAMABAD (Kyodo) -- At least 24peoplekilled and 50 others injured in a bomb explosion at a market in Pakistan's Kurram tribal region bordering Afghanistan on Sunday, a local senior official said.

     Amjad Ali Khan, political administrator for Kurram agency, said the bomb went off at Eidgah Market, where winter clothes are sold, in the town of Parachinar, the seat of the tribal agency. An official of the Bomb Disposal Unit said that nearly 35 kilograms of explosive material was used in the device.

     Among those killed and injured at the market are a number of children. Some of the critically injured have been shifted by helicopter to hospitals in the northwestern city of Peshawar.

     Witnesses said two suspicious people trying to flee the area were apprehended and handed over to the authorities.

     Parachinar, which has a predominantly Shiite Muslim population, has suffered from sectarian tensions at the hands of Sunni extremist organizations.

     Kurram is adjacent to North Waziristan tribal Agency, where an army operation against Taliban militants has been in progress for more than a month.
