NEPAL KING PAST BIRENDRA

Birendra was a well-loved king in Nepal. The most devoted of his Hindu subjects saw him as a manifestation of Shri Vishnu. Even those who disliked the monarchy were able to admire Birendra as a responsible and diplomatic leader of his small kingdom sandwiched between the giant countries of India and Nepal.

The and most of his family (including Queen Aiswarya) were massacred at a royal dinner on 1 June 2001.

It is still unclear that who is behind the royal killings... Nepalese people believe that Gyanendra is the main suspected mastermind behind the royal palace massacre...

However, according to published reports, his eldest son and heir, Dipendra (photo), was apparently the gunman, but he himself died a few days later of gunshot wounds suffered during the massacre."

Birendra's younger brother, Gyanendra, (photo) became king after the murders, totaling 12 deaths.

Unlike the gracious, cosmopolitan Birendra, the younger Gyanendra has an aggressive, militaristic style, and is intensely disliked. (Gyanendra was later deposed.)
